The Zipper Is Getting Its First Major Upgrade in 100 Years
By stripping away the fabric tape that's held zippers together for a hundred years, Japanese clothing giant YKK is designing the future of seamless clothing. For more than a century, the zipper has stayed more or less the same: two interlocking rows of teeth, a sliding pull, and the fabric tape that holds it together. Billions are used every day, yet few people ever stop to think about how they work. Now, after a hundred years of stasis, YKK, the Japanese company that makes roughly half the world's zippers, has decided it's time to rethink the mechanism that holds much of modern clothing together. Their new AiryString zipper looks ordinary at first glance.

Google's AI video creator gets major upgrade. How to use it.
Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. With every passing month, AI-generated content gets harder to distinguish from material made by human beings. Google's latest video maker is a case in point: The newly launched Veo 3 model is a step up in terms of realism, while also adding audio for the first time, so synced dialog, natural sound, and other audio effects can be added in. Google promises the new Veo 3 model has a better understanding of real world physics, and is smarter at turning your text prompts into video clips. Those clips are capped at eight seconds for now, and at a resolution of 720p--presumably because of the high computing (and environmental) demands of generating these videos.
Fox News AI Newsletter: DC air defense gets major upgrade
AI CAMERA SURVEILLANCE: The National Capital Region (NCR) is rolling out an advanced artificial intelligence-based visual recognition system that's taking air defense to a whole new level. THE FUTURE IS NOW: Autonomous, unmanned drones and artificial intelligence have already begun to shape the wars today and the future. Two US Air Force F-35 jets and a Polish Air Force F-16 take part in a military parade in Warsaw on Polish Army Day, August 15, 2023, to commemorate the anniversary of the 1920 victory over Soviet Russia at the Battle of Warsaw during the Polish-Soviet War. STAYING IN FIRST PLACE: As the U.S. races to maintain its global leadership in AI, much of the conversation revolves around natural language processing, the reshoring of the semiconductor supply chain and powering data centers. Google's Flagship Gemini AI Model Gets a Major Upgrade
Alphabet's Gemini AI model has been public for only two months, but the company is already releasing an upgrade. Gemini Pro 1.5, launching with limited availability today, is more powerful than its predecessor and can handle huge amounts of text, video, or audio input at a time. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, which developed the new model, compares its vast capacity for input to a person's working memory, something he explored years ago as a neuroscientist. "The great thing about these core capabilities is that they unlock sort of ancillary things that the model can do," he says. In a demo, Google DeepMind showed Gemini Pro 1.5 analyzing a 402-page PDF of the Apollo 11 communications transcript.

Google Bard Gets a Major Upgrade to Compete with ChatGPT and GPT-4 - Gizmochina
Artificial Intelligence is becoming more and more popular on the internet, and we hear about new AI advancements almost every day. However, most of the news we hear about AI developments is related to ChatGPT. This might come as a surprise to some, as even trillion-dollar tech companies are still lagging behind OpenAI when it comes to AI technology. However, Google is now looking to change this. The CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced that they will be upgrading Bard AI to more capable models next week.
The X-T5 is the first major upgrade to Fujifilm's compact camera flagship in 5 years
Fujifilm is delivering a follow-up to the well-received X-T4. The company has introduced (what else?) the X-T5, a sequel to the higher-end APS-C mirrorless camera that delivers some major technical upgrades -- the largest in five years -- while refining the basic formula. The new model now packs Fuji's current 40MP sensor (up from 26MP) that can shoot 6.2K video at 30 frames per second. You don't need to buy a top-tier cam like the X-H2S to venture beyond 4K. You can also expect a jump in computing power through the X-Processor 5 that allows for AI-based autofocusing, 4:2:2 10-bit output, F-log2 and support for the HEIF photo format.

The Oldest Crewed Deep Sea Submarine Just Got a Big Makeover
In early March, a gleaming white submarine called Alvin surfaced off the Atlantic coast of North Carolina after spending the afternoon thousands of feet below the surface. The submarine's pilot and two marine scientists had just returned from collecting samples around a methane seep, an oasis for carbon-munching microbes and the larger species of bottom dwellers that feed on them. It was the final dive of a month-long expedition that had taken the crew from the Gulf of Mexico up the East Coast, with stops along the way to explore a massive deep sea coral reef that had recently been discovered off the coast of South Carolina. For Bruce Strickrott, Alvin's chief pilot and the leader of the expedition, these sorts of missions to the bottom of the world are a regular part of life. Since he first started working on Alvin as an engineer nearly 25 years ago, Strickrott has logged more than 2,000 hours in the deep ocean, where he learned to expertly navigate the seabed's alien landscape and probe for samples with the submarine's spindly robotic arms.

GoPro Hero 2018 review: 7 smoother than previous editions and major upgrade
The new edition of the GoPro, the Hero7 Black, promises video as steady as a drone. Drone footage is as smooth as it gets, and now GoPro wants you to buy its new camera, saying the Hero7 Black edition is as smooth as a drone. What's missing, of course, is the added weight of the 3-axis gimbal that accompanies the drone and steadies the shot. The $399 Hero7 Black, out September 30, is the same tiny size as past GoPro cameras. Instead of using a gimbal, it uses software to steady the shot.
